Last
night I received a
call from a family
member a little
after 10 PM. My
sister and her
friend were walking
in Five Points and
they were mugged by
a man who threatened
to kill them if they
did not cooperate.
They were not
alone. Numerous
other people, young
women and one young
man, were also
threatened and
robbed.
As I
move through our
community, I often
remind people that
our city is only as
strong as the sum of
its parts. When an
area like Lower
Waverly – adjacent
to Five Points – is
allowed to
deteriorate, it
affects us all. I
learned this lesson
first hand last
night.
It is
time for a leader
who knows that
business as usual
equals results as
usual. I have
dedicated a
significant portion
of my time in this
campaign to studying
ways to improve the
safety of this
community.
Other cities have
made tremendous
safety improvements
in the past ten
years. We do not
have to re-invent
the wheel – we just
need vision.
We
must reconnect our
officers and
neighborhoods with a
return to community
policing. We must
work to protect our
children and
reconnect them with
their community. We
must take better
care of our officers
so that we do not
have regions
operating at 2/3rds
manpower. Officers
are leaving Columbia
for work elsewhere
because the pay is
better and they are
treated with more
dignity and respect
(I met yet another
officer on his way
out the door last
night).
It is
time for real
leadership that is
accountable to you.
Our job is to make
you safe, not to
grandstand.
Grandstanding is not
leadership. True
leadership is
uniting people
around a common
vision and towards a
shared goal.
I am
bringing true
leadership to
Columbia. Please
call me, email me or
write me. It is
time to reclaim our
community.
Sincerely,
